“Greeting Bear” (one of two) Cast concrete, (w36” x h42”) 1992 Los Osos, CA |
There are two castings of the bear, placed at each of the two bridges that lead to the town of "Los
Osos" in California. They are there because of activist Sylvia Smith,
who decided that a town with such a name should have a proper bear at
each of its entrances. Originally they were to be simple cast concrete, but the casting, done in another state and out of my hands, turned out quite badly. I had to do a great deal of patching and then painted both bears to conceal the patches. I learned my lesson on that one. Later, when one of the bears was vandalized, a local concrete company recast it and so perfectly that the piece could of remained unpainted. When I asked the assembled kids and grown-ups whether they wanted to leave it unpainted, which I preferred, or to have it be painted, they all cried out "Paint it like the other one!" so that's what we did. |
