"Artichoke"
(study)

"Artichoke", small study, oil painting by Paula Zima
10 x 8 inches, oil on museum board

Artichokes are surprisingly difficult to paint.
I never thought I'd say something like that!

I've taught people to draw over the years, and one
of my favorite sayings is that nothing is harder to
               draw than anything else.

It's because an artichoke has a lot of detail, and to
make the drawing or painting resemble an artichoke
you have to pay close attention to the shapes and how
they relate to each other.  A little known fact is that an
artichoke will dry up, right before your eyes as you
work,  so you must move fast.
